terraSolutions is the consultant of two Management Bodies of Protected areas in Greece (National Park of Samaria - White Mountains & Ecodevelopment Region of North Karpathos – Saria) for the MEET project. According to the World Tourism Organization, ecotourism is a major trend with a growing Demand for consumers for packages which offer responsible travel to natural areas, conservation of the environment, and improvement of the well-being of local people. The Mediterranean area is one of the most interesting regions in the world in terms of ecotourism potential. The high diversity of landscapes and ecosystems together with the unique socio-economic and cultural mosaic provide suitable conditions for the development of ecotourism. In order to foster the diversification of tourism offered and a better seasonal distribution of tourism flows, the Mediterranean Experience of Ecotourism (MEET) project aims to improve the sustainability and the rationalization in distribution of the tourism sector in the Mediterranean region. In the framework of cross-border cooperation within the European Neighborhood Policy Instrument (ENPI Med), under the strategic line “Promoting the sustainable tourism for the socio-economic development and enhancement of territories”, this strategic project involves 10 countries of the Mediterranean: Italy, France, Spain, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Malta, Cyprus, Greece and Tunisia. In June 2013, Negroponte Resort Eretria was the one that instead of beach nourishment, select to reveal the hidden underwater garden and its treasures (seagrasses, endemic and endangered species, fish, etc.) by means of underwater p hotography and the designation of a, safe and easy to swim, snorkeling path in front of the hotel. It Is the first hotel in Greece that will offer to the clients the opportunity to discover the form of marine life that exists in front of the hotel of their vacations. Pinna nobilis (noble shell) and green algae cover a large vast of the underwater garden. The noble shell is an endemic, rare and protected bivalve species of the Mediterranean Sea and thus we have not to take it of the sea in order to eat it or to use the shell for home decoration.
Dimitris Poursanidis, director of terraSolutions m.e.r. become member of the international team of meetyourneighbours. Founded in 2009, Meet Your Neighbours™ is a worldwide photographic initiative created by Niall Benvie and Clay Bolt. The project is dedicated to reconnecting people with the wildlife on their own doorsteps – and enriching their lives in the process. These creatures and plants are vital to people: they represent the first, and for some, the only contact with wild nature we have. Yet too often they are overlooked, undervalued. How does Meet Your Neighbours make this reconnection? Through producing inspiring imagery – the sort of pictures that make the viewer think, ‘I’ve got to see this for myself!” And then we encourage people to “meet their neighbours” through their own cameras.
